Three Picks From the Portfolio

Defense contractors, chipmakers, and biopharma companies are a big part of San Diego’s economy. These examples come from those worlds: a 3D product video for SWORD, a security screening device, a company profile for indie Semiconductor, and a whiteboard explainer for Prometic.

Three Phases From Kickoff to Delivery

Every Brandefy project moves through the same sequence. The process page has the longer version.

  1. 1Pre-production

We agree on the message, write the script, and draw the storyboard. Casting, locations, permits, and the shoot schedule are set before a camera comes out.

  2. 2Production

The crew films interviews, scenes, and product footage to the approved plan. For animated pieces, illustration and motion work begin at this stage.

  3. 3Post-production

Editors assemble the cut, then add color, sound, music, and graphics. After your review rounds, we export versions for web, social, and broadcast.

City of San Diego rules in brief

Lead time
Applications are due at least three full business days before filming, and a week or more when traffic control or another public-safety review is involved.
Cost
The city charges nothing to process a filming application. Productions pay for any police, traffic, or fire services they use.
Insurance
At least $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate, with the city named as an additional insured.
Neighbors
When a shoot affects the public, residents and businesses within 300 feet have to be notified.

Drones. Large parts of the city sit under controlled airspace for San Diego International Airport and nearby military airfields, so flights need FAA authorization ahead of time.

Private property. Filming on private property generally needs no city registration unless the shoot calls for a public-safety review. The owner’s permission is still required.

San Diego Video Production Questions, Answered

Where can we find Brandefy in San Diego?

Our office is at 8910 University Center Lane, San Diego, CA 92122, in University City near UC San Diego. The company began in 2011 and is headquartered in Santa Monica.

What does a San Diego video production cost?

Budgets generally fall between $5,000 and $100,000, with larger campaigns above that. The main drivers are the number of filming days, the size of the crew and cast, the locations, and the volume of animation or graphics. You receive a quote once we understand the project.

How long will our project take?

Allow two to four weeks for a simple video and four to six for something mid-sized. A campaign with multiple deliverables usually needs twelve weeks or more. City filming applications need at least three business days, so a basic permit fits inside that window.

Is a permit needed to film in San Diego?

On public property, yes. The City of San Diego Film Office handles streets and sidewalks, Parks and Recreation handles city parks and beaches, and the Port of San Diego covers much of the bayfront. Filming on private property usually needs no city registration unless it calls for a public-safety review.

Is the city film permit free?

The City of San Diego does not charge to process a filming application. You do pay for any city services the shoot requires, such as police traffic control, and for insurance that meets the city’s minimums.

Can we shoot at Balboa Park or on a city beach?

Both can be arranged with approval from the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. We submit the application and insurance certificate as part of pre-production.

Which kinds of video can we order?

What is the first step?

Tell us about the project through the quote form or by phone at (424) 835-0405. After a short call to confirm goals, timing, and budget, we send a proposal.
