Video Production in New York City

Brandefy has produced video since 2011. Our New York office is on Fifth Avenue in Midtown, and from there we plan and film projects in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Editing, graphics, and sound stay with the same team.

Filming here means working around the city: compact interiors, noisy streets, freight elevators that need booking, and very little room to park a truck. We sort those details out during planning, along with permits and insurance, so shoot days go to filming.

What to Know Before Filming in New York City

The rules here are specific, and several agencies have a say. This is the short version of what we check while planning a shoot.

  • When a permit is requiredThe Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment requires a film permit when a production uses equipment beyond handheld cameras and tripods, asks for parking for production vehicles, or claims exclusive use of city property.
  • When it isn’tFilming on a sidewalk or in a park with a handheld camera, without claiming the space for yourself, generally needs no permit. Private interiors are arranged with the owner instead.
  • Fees and insuranceThe application fee is $500 for each consecutive 14-day period, and it is nonrefundable. The Film Office also requires proof of insurance.
  • Lead timePermit requests are usually processed between 72 and 48 business hours ahead of the shoot. Times Square locations need at least 7 business days.
  • Parks, subways, and other propertyPark locations need Parks Department approval before the Film Office application goes in. The MTA handles its own permits for subways and stations, and state parks, federal sites, and Port Authority property each run a separate process.
  • DronesLaunching or landing a drone in the city requires an NYPD permit. The application is due at least 30 days ahead and carries a $150 fee, and the pilot needs FAA Part 107 certification.
  • State commercial tax creditNew York State’s Commercial Tax Credit Program covers 20% of qualified downstate costs above $500,000 in a calendar year, or 30% above $100,000 upstate. It is aimed at advertisers with large annual spend, so most single projects won’t qualify.
  • Sound and building accessSirens, construction, and traffic end up in most exterior takes, so interviews are usually better indoors. Many buildings ask for a certificate of insurance and a reserved freight elevator slot before a crew can load in.

From Brief to Final Cut in Three Phases

Every project follows the same path, whatever its size. Our process page covers each phase in more detail.

  1. Pre-production

The idea, script, and storyboard are agreed first, followed by casting, location scouting, and scheduling. Permits, insurance certificates, and building access are confirmed at this stage.

  2. Production

A director and crew film on location or on a stage, working from a shot list you have approved. Animated projects move into design and animation here.

  3. Post-production

Editing, color, sound mix, music, and graphics, with review rounds built in. You receive final files sized for each channel you plan to use, from widescreen masters to vertical cuts.

New York Video Production FAQ

Where is Brandefy located in New York?

Our New York office is at 575 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10017, on the corner of 47th Street in Midtown Manhattan. The company dates to 2011, and its head office is in Santa Monica, California.

How much does a New York video cost?

Most projects we quote land between $5,000 and $100,000, and large campaigns can go higher. Crew size, the number of shoot days, talent, locations, permits, and how much animation is involved all move the figure. You get a written quote after a first call.

How long does a New York project take?

A one-location video typically wraps within 2 to 4 weeks of kickoff, while mid-size projects need 4 to 6. Allow 12 weeks or longer for a multi-video campaign. A city permit, a Times Square location, or a drone flight adds lead time.

Is a film permit required in New York?

That depends on the footprint. A handheld camera on a sidewalk, with no exclusive use of the space, generally needs no permit. Once a shoot brings larger equipment, production vehicles, or exclusive use of city property, the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment requires one. We prepare the application during pre-production.

Can a drone be used on a New York shoot?

It is possible with enough notice. Taking off or landing in the city requires an NYPD permit applied for at least 30 days in advance, and the pilot must hold FAA Part 107 certification. Tell us early if aerial shots matter to the concept.

Do you film outside Manhattan?

Yes. We film in all five boroughs and in nearby parts of New Jersey, Westchester, Long Island, and Connecticut. Animated projects need no location at all.
