Our Three-Phase Production Process

  1. Pre-production

We start with discovery and strategy, then develop the concept, script, and storyboard for your sign-off. Casting, location scouting, scheduling, and permit applications are handled in this phase.
  2. Production

The approved script and storyboard get made. Live-action shoots run on location or in a studio with a dedicated crew, lighting, and audio. Animated projects move into animation and voiceover.
  3. Post-production

Editing, graphics, color, and audio mixing, followed by revision rounds with you. We then deliver final files in every format you need.

Who We Make Video for in Chicago

Few cities have an economy this mixed. These are the sectors where video does the most work, and the format that tends to fit each one.

Food and consumer goods

Some of the biggest names in packaged food are based here. Short product spots and social cuts help a brand win space on the shelf and in the feed.

Social videos

Finance and trading

LaSalle Street banks, trading firms, and fintech startups use customer stories to make complicated products feel approachable.

See the lender story

Manufacturing and industrial

The region still builds machinery, food equipment, and medical devices. 3D animation shows how a product works when a camera cannot get inside it.

Conventions and trade shows

McCormick Place is the largest convention center in North America. Booth films, keynote recaps, and highlight reels keep working after the show closes.

Event videos

Healthcare and pharma

Hospital systems downtown and drug and device makers in the northern suburbs need patient education and staff training that holds up to compliance review.

Agencies and in-house teams

Ad agencies and corporate marketing departments can bring us in as the production arm: we shoot to your boards and deliver to your specs.

Shooting in Chicago: Rules, Weather, and Timing

What we check before we lock a schedule here.

Street and sidewalk permits
The Chicago Film Office permits shoots that put equipment or vehicles on streets, sidewalks, or alleys. It asks for at least 4 full business days to review an application, and 10 for street closures, stunts, and other high-impact work. Small crews gathering B-roll without blocking anyone usually do not need one.
Parks, piers, and the L
Millennium Park, Navy Pier, the Chicago Park District, and the CTA each issue their own permits, separate from the Film Office. The Riverwalk needs at least 10 days of notice and has peak-season limits.
Neighbors
When a shoot takes parking or closes a street, nearby residents and businesses have to be leafleted at least 48 hours ahead.
Winter
December through February brings short days, hard cold, and wind off the lake. We plan exteriors around roughly nine hours of daylight, keep batteries warm, and hold an interior cover set.
Summer and fall crowds
Lollapalooza takes over Grant Park around the start of August, the Air and Water Show fills the lakefront later that month, and the Chicago Marathon closes streets across the city in October. Big shows at McCormick Place tighten hotels and crew availability all year.
Drones
Aerials need an FAA Part 107 pilot and a Film Office request filed at least 5 full business days out, more for complex flights. Areas near O’Hare and Midway also sit in controlled airspace.
Illinois tax credit
Illinois offers a 35% film production tax credit on qualified in-state spending, and commercials are eligible. A project under 30 minutes has to spend at least $50,000 in Illinois, which puts the credit within reach of larger brand campaigns.

Chicago Video Production: Common Questions

How much should we budget for a video in Chicago?

A single, simple video with Brandefy starts around $5,000. Several shoot days, a larger cast, or a lot of animation raise the number, and full campaigns can run $100,000 or more. You get a detailed estimate after the first call.

How quickly can you turn a project around?

Two to four weeks is realistic for one simple video. Most projects take four to six weeks, and a campaign with many deliverables can take twelve or longer. Filming on a Chicago street or sidewalk adds at least four business days for the permit.

Where is the Brandefy Chicago office?

It is at 625 W Adams Street, Chicago, IL 60661, in the West Loop. Brandefy’s headquarters are in Santa Monica, California, and the company has been producing video since 2011.

When do we need a film permit in Chicago?

When a shoot occupies a street, sidewalk, alley, or other city property with equipment or vehicles, or gets in the way of traffic or pedestrians. The Chicago Film Office handles those permits and needs at least four full business days. Filming inside a private home or business needs the owner’s approval instead.

Can you film at Millennium Park, Navy Pier, or on the Riverwalk?

With the right permission, yes. Millennium Park and Navy Pier issue their own permits rather than going through the Film Office, and the Riverwalk asks for at least 10 days of notice with restrictions in peak season. We work out who to apply to during pre-production.

Is it practical to shoot outdoors in a Chicago winter?

It is, with planning. Daylight drops to about nine hours in late December, so exterior scenes get scheduled tightly around midday. We also build in warm-up breaks for cast and crew and keep an indoor backup location ready in case the wind or snow wins.

Can you cover a trade show at McCormick Place?

Event coverage is one of our regular formats, including booth films, keynote recaps, and highlight reels. Convention centers set their own rules for outside crews, power, and load-in, so send us the show name and booth number early and we will coordinate with show management.

Does the Illinois film tax credit apply to commercials?

Commercials are eligible. The credit is 35% of qualified Illinois spending, and a project under 30 minutes has to spend at least $50,000 in the state. The Illinois Film Office reviews applications, and they have to be filed before filming begins.

Which Chicago suburbs do you work in?

We travel throughout Cook, DuPage, Lake, and Will counties, including Evanston, Skokie, Oak Park, Oak Brook, Schaumburg, Naperville, Aurora, Joliet, and Northbrook.

What happens after we contact you?

We set up a call to go over the brief, then send a proposal with the concept, schedule, and cost. You can reach us through the form on this page or at (424) 835-0405.
