Permits
The City of Austin requires a permit to film on public property such as city streets, sidewalks, and parks, whatever the crew size. Filming on private property generally does not need one. Right-of-way film permits usually process in 3 to 5 business days, so we build that into the schedule.
Locations
Within a short drive you can get the downtown skyline, Lady Bird Lake, South Congress storefronts, East Austin murals, modern tech campuses, and Hill Country ranch land. One shoot day can cover several looks.
Heat and light
Summer afternoons often reach triple digits. We schedule exteriors for early morning or the hour before sunset and keep interiors for midday.
Busy weeks
Crews, hotels, and locations book up around SXSW in March, and around ACL Festival and the Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix in October. If your shoot lands near those dates, start planning early.
Aerials
Commercial drone flights need an FAA Part 107 certified pilot, and parts of Austin near the airport sit in controlled airspace that requires FAA authorization before takeoff.
Texas incentives
Commercials that spend at least $100,000 in Texas may qualify for a grant through the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program. The Texas Film Commission sets the rules and reviews applications.
